Let’s start with the definition. EDM is defined as Popular music intended for dancing in clubs. Typically having a repetitive beat and a synthesized backing track.

What is EDM?

EDM is not a genre but is actually the broad term for the genres like rock, Metal, Disco, House, Techno, etc. Generally, EDM is made by a DJ for the Nightclubs, Raves, and festivals by tracks been designed to flow seamlessly on one another.

So basically, EDM is made using virtual instruments. Instruments that are made totally using VST plugins.

Subgenres

Electro

Electro is the oldest and simple form of the EDM genre. Generally, Electronic Music is made by using a Drum Machine and samples of the Pop machine.

History

EDM was born in the late 60s after the invention of MIDI. Thanks to Ikutaro Kakehasi for that. If he wouldn’t have invented the MIDI, maybe it would have taken time. Today’s EDM sounds different from the 60s, 70s, and 80s as the technique has evolved with time and is still in the process of evolution.

In the late 70s, inspired by Jamaican sound system culture, DJ Kool Herc (A Jamaican-American DJ) introduced large bass-heavy music. Which was the beginning of the new music era. His music mostly featured heavy kicks which started the hip-hop movement in New York in 1973.

Initially, EDM was just present in the form of various genres but wasn’t technically in the mainstream. In the 2010s, there began a significant rise of EDM in the commercial market. Music producers like Avicii and David Guetta started marketing their music on pop-radio shows.

Many attempts were made in order to categorize the style of EDM into new terms like defusion of pop music and hip hop. But everything failed. Later it was decided to just address the style with Pop or Dance Music. But either way, they both fall under the EDM genre.
